(Carson City, NV – January 11, 2011) – Secretary of State Ross Miller has appointed Reno attorney Scott F. Gilles to serve as his new Deputy for Elections. Mr. Gilles has been a Senior Associate Attorney for the Reno firm of Fahrendorf, Viloria, Oliphant & Oster L.L. P., since February of 2006. He also served as a law clerk for retired 1st Judicial District Court Michael R. Griffin in Carson City. He has a Bachelors degree in English Writing with a minor in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Reno, and received his law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law.

“Scott will bring highly valuable litigation experience to the job of Elections Deputy,” Secretary Miller said in announcing the appointment. “It seems there are challenges to state election laws every cycle and Scott will be prepared to handle whatever comes our way, whether a candidate or citizen challenges a decision I make as Chief Elections Officer, or whether we initiate action in order to maintain and improve accountability and transparency in election law.”

“I’m honored to have been asked to serve Secretary Miller as his Elections Deputy,” Mr. Gilles said in accepting the appointment. “I fully appreciate how important it is to the citizens of the state to aggressively defend their rights to open, fair elections and to access important information about the candidates running for public office. I look forward to working with Secretary Miller to do just that.”

Secretary Miller added that Mr. Gilles will be spending a lot of time with him at the Nevada Legislature, advocating for passage of his election reform bills. Mr. Gilles will join the Secretary of State’s staff on January 26.
