(Reno, NV; December 6, 2011) – Tackling the problem of financial illiteracy among Nevada students head-on, Secretary of State Ross Miller today engaged in a game of “Financial Football” – an interactive money management video game with an NFL theme – with students at Earl Wooster High School to begin the educational process of fiscal responsibility. Secretary Miller is distributing free copies of “Financial Football” and “Financial Soccer” to every school district in Nevada who requests them.
The centerpieces of Visa Inc.’s nationwide educational initiative with the NFL (National Football League) and FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), “Financial Football” and “Financial Soccer” help students tackle their financial futures. The computer-based games are accompanied by a classroom curriculum, and “Financial Football” is available online at http://nv.financialfootball.com and as a free iPhone app on iTunes, along with an optimized HD iPad version.
“It is critical for Nevada students to know how to make smart money management decisions before heading off to college or entering the workforce,” said Miller. “It takes the combined efforts of parents, teachers, and mentors within the community to help children develop and build strong financial muscles. Playing ‘Financial Football’ or ‘Financial Soccer’ is a great way to get Nevada students interested in personal finances and gives them a financial playbook they can use the rest of their lives.

Raising the level of financial literacy awareness and education is not something that can be done overnight or by government alone. Demonstrating broad-based support for having financial education begin at home and extend to the classroom, a new study released by Visa Inc. shows 91% of consumers surveyed believe all students should take a financial education class before graduating.
Visa Inc. and Miller hope “Financial Football” can help students jumpstart the learning process. Both “Financial Football” and “Financial Soccer” put students’ fiscal knowledge to the test with a video game that combines the structure and rules of the NFL and FIFA with financial education questions of varying difficulty. To score points, a player needs to answer various money management questions correctly. Wrong answers and penalties can cost a team yardage. The team with the highest point total after four quarters or two halves wins the game. The games’ content, developed with the cooperation of the NFL and FIFA, incorporates lessons taught through Practical Money Skills for Life, Visa Inc.'s free, award-winning money management program.
“Financial Football” and “Financial Soccer” are part of Practical Money Skills for Life (www.practicalmoneyskills.com), a free, award-winning, teacher-tested and teacher-approved financial education program that is available in English, Spanish and Chinese. The program contains three comprehensive sections, complete with money management resources and lesson plans tailored for use at home, in the classroom or at work.
